Time management and note-taking

Please read Chapters III and IV of Dragons. Of the planning, time management, and note-taking advice here, what do you think will be most important for you personally? In which of these areas are you already fairly strong? Where do you need work?

  1. For me personally, I think that the most important advice given in these two chapters for me is the time management/planning. In high school, if I had homework, I put it off to the last day or the due date. To be successful in college, you can't get by on twenty minutes of out of class time. You need to have just a small plan to know when you are going to study and do your work and when you are going to have fun. These to areas are also the ones that I need to work at. Surprisingly enough, I think that time management is also my strongest characteristic of the three. When I do end up doing my work, I am very efficient and make sure that I can get my work done. My note taking in high school was fairly strong but I also only had to write down about a page and a half of notes per class and the teacher wrote everything that I need to know down on the board. I could definitely improve on all three of these areas.

  2. I think the most important part of the reading would be how important actually making a schedule for yourself is. In high school I had a big procrastination problem, and I usually put things off until the absolute latest that I could. Actually studying material again is another thing I could work on, since my older study habits were take notes and glance at them the night before the tests. I think it sounds terrible to say that none of these study/planning tips are a strong point for me, but I hope that during this class I'll pick up on much better habits.

  3. From my senior year in high school I took away one skill, proficiently taking lecture notes. I really want to maintain this ability since it clearly will be necessary for the future and being successful in class. To me this is the main thought, if I can effectively learn to listen thoroughly to my professors and transcribe what they're trying to teach me in class. This overlaps with study habits since I should be able to then easily read my notes and apply my knowledge more throughly. As for the time management, yes very important, also stressful, what would happen if something important changed, it would through me for a loop and most likely cause me to panically scribble all my notes in a rush to get them done, while not throughly learning the topic.

  4. For me personally, the best advice given was bettering time management. It will be hardest for me to avoid time wasters. I'm a huge procrastinator and I really need to break that habit. I'm already pretty good at taking notes as I had an instructor in high school where we took pages of notes in class each day. Like I said before, I need work most in time management, that can probably done for me by making a schedule.

  5. Personally, I think that time management is the most important for me. I have never really had to manage my time before, but I have had to take good notes. I always have friends that want to go out, friends that want to talk to me for hours on end while I am trying to do homework, and people going in and out of my dorm room already and it is only the first week. I think that I might have a difficult time finding the time to do all of the homework and studying I am supposed to do outside of class.
I would like to think that I am a good note taker. I have had a lot of practice in note taking and hopefully that will happen in college as well. I do, however, learn more by verbal word than writing something down. So, in particular, I need to work on being able to take notes and actually get something out of them.

  6. For me, time management will be the most important. I tend to get distracted easily by other leisure activities when I should be studying. I'm fairly good at taking notes and picking out highlights, so I'm not terribly worried there. I'm going to try making a schedule to help with my time management, because I know that's my biggest concern right now.

  7. Learning how to take good notes was really a plus for me. Usually I take pretty good notes and pay attention but adding different tools that I learned will hopefully make classes and test a little easier.

  8. Time management huh... Well I hope to manage my time well here. The note taking portion of this was the most beneficial to me. I found that taking notes in your class will be an interesting challenge.

  10. The most important thing to me in these two chapters was time management and how to make a schedule. In high school I tried to get a head of myself sometimes and in the end I just left it till the day or night before it was due. Taking notes won't be very hard for me, but I will admit I like to write all over the place to save paper but having the notes being organized will help out a lot. Writing out dates on my notes will help me process the memorization part of taking notes for classes.

  11. Studying and time management are by far the most important two things in the reading. I have always been a fairly good note taker, however; I have never been very good with time management or studying. If I can learn to do both I will have a great chance to succeed in college.

  12. Time management and studying are two very difficult things for me 1: because im flat out lazy, 2: Because I get bored easily, and 3: because i don't prioritize. But with this "guide to good study habits" i'll be able to do such things, as long as i don't forget to do the readings and assignments.

  13. The two things I took the most from the chapter were time management (Ha, obviously that's an area I need to work on.) and my study habits. I call myself a "Procrastinating Perfectionist". I do so because I always put things off until the last minute, but I hold myself to a high standard. I had good grades in high school using this method, along with not studying. But after reading the chapter I don't think that's gonna work in college.

  14. I am fairly good at both organization and note-taking. However, I could definitely use work in both areas, especially organization. There are so many things I want to get done each day, and I often times find I don't have time for them all. It would be better for me to make a weekly schedule than a daily schedule. Also, it would be nice for me to set clearer long term goals and better priorities so I'm not wasting my time on foolish or useless things. The information most important to me is definitely the time management advice. That is where I could use most work as I am stronger at note taking.

  15. Time management is what I need to work on. I am good at note taking but there is always room for improvement. In high school my time management was not so good. I know in college that I must work to improve it epically while I am in soccer.

  16. I think the point that was most important to me was managing my time wisely. I liked the tips and it will really help me further my college experience. I think I'm pretty good at taking notes and have never had a problem with it but some of the points made in the book I never thought of that could better my note taking ability. The area I need work in is managing time, because I'm slowly learning I need to study more and realize college isn't a free ride, I know because I've checked my bank account after paying tuition.
